What is Apple Focus?

Apple Focus is a core iOS feature designed to help users manage distractions and improve their digital wellbeing.

framing the problem

Yet, Apple Focus lacked clear visibility, intuitive setup, and flexible privacy options, making it challenging for users to confidently discover and control their digital well-being experience. This user experience challenge led to low user adoption.

How does Apple Focus stack up?

Compared to competitors like Google Digital Wellbeing, Opal, and One Sec, Apple Focus has strong ecosystem advantages but lags on discoverability and social features.

Google Digital Wellbeing: Provides excellent onboarding and clear usage insights for Android users, though it lacks cross-device syncing and social features to motivate users.

OneSec: Highly effective at breaking unconscious habits through customized psychological delays, but it's primarily a "single-trick" tool that lacks broader social or calendar ecosystem support.

Opal: Offers a very user-friendly onboarding experience for deep-work app blocking but no support for social, calendar, or cross-device functionality.

Understanding gaps in Apple Focus awareness

With a clearer grasp of the situation, I defined 'what success looks like'.

Poor feature visibility and guidance

Most users don't know what Focus can do. The icon offers no signal, and there's no onboarding to surface capabilities.

  1. Drive Focus adoption

Get more users actively using Focus instead of defaulting to plain Do Not Disturb through better visibility, easier entry points, and Group Focus sessions that create habit.

Fragmented access to sharing, automation, and controls

Sharing status, scheduling automations, and adjusting app permissions are all buried in different places with no unified hub.

  1. Simplify the setup experience

37% of users didn't use Focus because they didn't know what it could do. Replace the fragmented Settings menus with a single-scroll, modular configuration to make every feature feel discoverable.

Poor personalization flexibility

Users noted they liked the flexibility to control specific permissions, having the app be less overwhelming if done.

  1. Build trust through privacy controls

Users want flexibility over who sees their Focus status. Granular per-mode sharing controls and clearer privacy settings should reduce friction and complaints.
